5-Day Thailand Itinerary for First-Time Visitors
See a realistic 5-day Thailand itinerary through Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket with balanced pacing for temples, food, markets, and beach time.
Day 1: Bangkok, Thailand
Arrive in Bangkok, check in by the river, and focus the first day on the historic core and a relaxed evening on the water.
- 9:00 AM — Arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport and transfer into central Bangkok.
- 9:45 AM — Airport taxi to the riverside: Suvarnabhumi Airport → Rattanakosin / Tha Tien area. Staying near the old city makes the first two days much easier.
- 10:45 AM — Stay at Riva Arun Bangkok. Well-located small hotel near Wat Pho and the river ferries.
- 12:00 PM — The Grand Palace: Bangkoks ceremonial royal complex and one of the citys essential historic sights. Dress modestly and aim for a focused visit rather than pairing too many major sites in the same midday block.
- 2:30 PM — Eat at Supanniga Eating Room Tha Tien. Good lunch stop close to the old-city temple area.
- 4:00 PM — Wat Arun: The Temple of Dawn, known for its riverside setting and decorated central prang. Easy to pair with the old city by ferry across the Chao Phraya River.
- 6:30 PM — Sunset long-tail boat or dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya (Chao Phraya River) A strong first-night activity that does not require another long transfer.
Day 2: Bangkok to Chiang Mai
Finish Bangkoks classic temple area in the morning, then take an evening domestic flight north to Chiang Mai.
- 8:30 AM — Wat Pho: Temple complex famous for the Reclining Buddha and traditional Thai massage heritage. Best visited early, before the heat and heavier crowds build up.
- 10:30 AM — Traditional Thai massage near Wat Pho (Tha Tien area) Fits naturally after a morning temple visit and before heading to the airport later.
- 1:00 PM — Pak Khlong Talat flower market: Large flower market with busy daytime trade and easy access from the old city. A practical nearby stop instead of forcing a long out-of-town floating market detour into a short itinerary.
- 4:00 PM — Transfer to Don Mueang or Suvarnabhumi: Bangkok riverside hotel → Bangkok airport. Allow extra time because Bangkok traffic can be slow.
- 6:30 PM — Evening flight to Chiang Mai (Bangkok to Chiang Mai) An evening flight preserves most of the day in Bangkok without making arrival in Chiang Mai too late.
- 8:30 PM — Stay at U Chiang Mai. Comfortable base inside or close to the old city.
Day 3: Chiang Mai, Thailand
Use your Chiang Mai day for one signature ethical elephant experience, then keep the evening in town simple with the night market.
- 8:00 AM — Elephant Nature Park day visit (Elephant Nature Park) This is best treated as the main event of the day rather than combining it with more distant mountain sights.
- 5:30 PM — Return to Chiang Mai after the sanctuary program and freshen up at the hotel.
- 7:00 PM — Chiang Mai Night Bazaar: One of the citys best-known evening markets for handicrafts, snacks, and casual shopping. An easy low-pressure evening plan after a full day trip.
- 8:00 PM — Eat at Ginger and Kafe. Popular Chiang Mai spot with Thai dishes and an easy location for an evening in town.
Day 4: Phuket, Thailand
Fly south to Phuket and keep the first island day realistic with Phuket Old Town, a viewpoint, and a beachside evening.
- 8:30 AM — Morning flight to Phuket (Chiang Mai to Phuket) A morning flight gives enough time to actually enjoy Phuket after arrival.
- 11:30 AM — Stay at The Slate Phuket. Upscale resort near Nai Yang Beach and the airport, useful for a short Phuket stay.
- 1:30 PM — Phuket Old Town: Historic quarter with Sino-Portuguese shophouses, cafes, and street-art lanes. A better short-stay choice than trying to cram in too many scattered island sights.
- 4:30 PM — Late afternoon viewpoint stop (Karon Viewpoint or Promthep Cape) Choose one good sunset viewpoint instead of overloading the day.
- 6:30 PM — Nai Yang Beach: A quieter Phuket beach well suited to a relaxed evening after travel. Keeps the evening easy if you are staying near the airport for the short itinerary.
Day 5: Phuket and Phi Phi Islands
Spend the final day on a full Phi Phi Islands boat trip, then return to Phuket for departure.
- 7:30 AM — Phi Phi Islands speedboat day trip (Phuket marina to Phi Phi Islands) Most operators include hotel pickup, boat transfers, lunch, and snorkeling stops.
- 10:30 AM — Phi Phi Islands: Popular Andaman island group known for limestone scenery, turquoise water, and boat-access beaches. This is the final headline experience of the Thailand route.
- 6:00 PM — Return to Phuket in the evening and head straight to the airport if flying out the same night.
- 6:30 PM — Pier to Phuket International Airport: Phuket marina → Phuket International Airport. Leave buffer time if you book a same-night departure after the boat trip.
- 9:30 PM — Departure flight from Phuket International Airport.
