Adara Kanda (Lover's Peak)
A mountain of around 1,500 metres near Belihuloya, also called Paraviyangala, with a long hike through pine plantations to views over Samanala Wewa.
Adara Kanda, whose name means "Lover's Peak," is a mountain of around 1,500 metres near Belihuloya, also known locally as Paraviyangala. It is one of the most popular hikes and camping spots in the area with Sri Lankan hikers, and it gives you a long, varied day in the hills, from pine plantations and streams to open grassy slopes.
The trail alternates between steep climbs and gentler stretches. Around half an hour in, a footpath leads to a small Buddhist monastery, and further up the route crosses streams and passes flat spots where small groups sometimes camp. From the top, the views stretch over the hills of the Belihuloya area, Samanala Wewa reservoir and the plains beyond.
It is a long hike, usually around four to five hours to the summit, so start early and carry plenty of water and food. The last section can be confusing, and some hikers have lost a lot of time finding the way, so take a guide or a reliable GPS track. Local villagers can also help with directions at the start. The top is exposed and often windy, so bring a light jacket.
Rain is common in some months, and the paths become slippery when wet, so the drier months are best. Adara Kanda pairs well with a stop at Bambarakanda Falls or a drive up to Baker's Bend, which looks out over the same landscape. Please take all your rubbish back down with you.
