Ambuluwawa Tower

Near Gampola, not too far from Kandy, there's a mountain that decided to be about six different things at once, and somehow it works. Ambuluwawa isn't a temple in the usual sense, and that catches a lot of first time visitors off guard. It's a multi religious site built with a very specific goal in mind, promoting peace and unity across Sri Lanka's different faiths, originally championed by former Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake back in the late 20th century. So on the way up, you pass shrines and symbols from Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity, each one placed deliberately alongside the others, a quiet architectural argument for coexistence.
But the tower itself is really what people come for. Rising 48 meters from a peak already sitting high above sea level, it's reached by a narrow spiral staircase that gets tighter the further up you climb. Nobody exaggerates when they call it a workout, and if heights genuinely bother you, this one might test your nerve more than you'd expect walking in.
That said, the reward at the top is hard to argue with. You get a full 360 degree sweep of the Central Province, misty hills, tea plantations, reservoirs catching the light, distant towns scattered across the valley floor like someone dropped them there absentmindedly. It's the kind of view that makes you forget your legs are shaking from the climb, at least for a minute or two.
Beyond the tower, the grounds double as a biodiversity park, home to a genuinely wide mix of trees, plants and bird-life, so it's worth wandering a bit even after you've come back down. Getting to the summit itself involves a steep 3 km climb from the entrance gate, steep enough that most people either hire a tuk-tuk for the ride up or accept the fact their own vehicle might not love the terrain.
