Arcade Independence Square
A grand colonial building elegantly restored into an upmarket shopping and dining arcade beside Independence Square, floodlit and photogenic after dark.
Arcade Independence Square is proof that an old building can find a second life. A grand colonial structure beside Independence Square has been carefully restored and turned into an upmarket arcade, and the result is one of the most photogenic spots in Colombo 7.
Inside, you'll find a mix of cafés, restaurants and shops spread through the old halls and courtyards. It's a comfortable, cool place to take a break from the heat, whether you want a proper meal, a quick coffee or just a slow browse. Entry is free, and most shops keep roughly 10am to 10pm hours.
The best time to come is in the evening. Once the sun goes down, the whitewashed facade is floodlit and the whole building glows. The lawns and open space around Independence Square fill up with families and walkers, and there's a relaxed, easy feel to the place that's hard to find in busier parts of the city.
An hour is plenty for most visits, though it's easy to stay longer over dinner. The arcade sits right by Independence Memorial Hall, so it makes sense to see both together. Walk across to the hall first while there's still light, then wander back to the arcade as the lights come on.
Cinnamon Gardens is also one of Colombo's greener, calmer neighbourhoods. If you have time, a short stroll through its leafy streets is a pleasant way to round off the evening.
