Baker's Falls
A wide, tiered waterfall tucked into the cloud forest of Horton Plains, framed by rhododendron and fern, reached on a short spur off the main loop trail.
About 3 km from the main entrance of Horton Plains National Park, along the same trail that leads to World's End, water tumbles 20 meters down a rocky ledge into a scene that feels almost too dramatic for how quietly it sits within the park. Baker's Falls was originally known as Gonagala Ella, later renamed after Sir Samuel Baker, the British explorer and big game hunter credited with documenting the waterfall in 1845 during his expeditions across the central highlands. Formed by the Belihul Oya, a major tributary of the Walawe River, the falls drop in twin cascades across a width of around 25 meters, flanked by rocky outcrops that amplify both the sound and the mist rising off the water.
The plunge pool beneath the falls runs surprisingly deep, around 12 meters, and carries a reputation for danger that's earned through real incidents over the years, so swimming here is actively discouraged despite how inviting the pool can look from the trail above. Most hikers reach Baker's Falls after passing Mini World's End, part of the same loop trail that eventually leads to World's End itself, meaning the waterfall usually becomes one stop within a longer, fuller morning of walking rather than a destination visited entirely on its own. Lush vegetation crowds the approach, and wildlife sightings along the way, deer, macaques, the occasional glimpse of a bird found nowhere else on the island, add to the sense that this stretch of trail rewards patience as much as the falls themselves do.
