Beddagana Wetland Park
A restored wetland reserve on the edge of the city with boardwalks over lily-covered marsh, a surprising haven for birds, butterflies and monitor lizards close to the capital.
Beddagana Wetland Park sits in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, Sri Lanka's administrative capital, an 18-hectare pocket of untouched wetland tucked within the wider Diyawanna Oya flood plains, just minutes from the bustle of Colombo. The area's ecological importance was first recognised back in 1985, when the Sri Lankan Department of Wildlife Conservation designated it a Wildlife Sanctuary, though it would take several more decades before it opened its gates to the public.
That transformation came through the Metro Colombo Urban Development Project, which redesigned the area as a wetland park in 2013, formally opening it to visitors in 2016. Since then, the park has become one of the city's clearest examples of urban conservation done well, protecting native flora and fauna while also helping manage flooding from the nearby Diyawanna Lake.

Inside, two main trails wind through the park's varied terrain: one hugs the edge of Diyawanna Oya along raised wooden walkways, passing a butterfly path and a duck pond before ending on a timber deck over the water, while the other cuts through a shaded wetland forest, offering good sightings of migratory birds along the way. The park is home to more than 50 bird species and 119 species of butterflies, making it a genuine draw for birdwatchers, especially between November and February, when migratory species pass through in numbers.
