A photogenic cluster of coconut palms on a green headland jutting into the sea at the eastern end of Mirissa, one of the most Instagrammed spots on the coast.
A short walk from Mirissa's main beach, a small, dome shaped hillock crowned with rows of impossibly symmetrical coconut palms has become one of the most photographed spots anywhere in Sri Lanka. Coconut Tree Hill sits on privately owned land, yet remains freely open to visitors, its palms curving dramatically over a cliff edge that drops straight into the open Indian Ocean, framing views of Mirissa Bay that look almost too perfectly composed to be natural.
Reaching the hilltop takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes, either walking along the beach from Mirissa's main bay when the sea is calm, or via the slightly more reliable inland route past Bandaramulla Temple, passable regardless of weather. The final stretch climbs through a small coconut estate, red soil that turns genuinely slippery after rain, before opening onto the headland itself, an entirely seaward view with virtually no shade, meaning timing here matters just as much as the destination.
Sunrise remains the clear favorite among regulars, soft early light, a real chance of having the palms mostly to yourself before the day's crowds arrive, while sunset draws a livelier, more social atmosphere but considerably more company jostling for the same shot. Below the hill, Mirissa Beach itself continues the appeal, swimming, snorkeling and sea kayaking all easily arranged, making it simple to pair a sunrise or sunset visit here with a full, unhurried day spent on the sand just below.
