Colombo Fort is the historic heart of the city, the district where Colombo's story as a trading and colonial hub really begins. Once a fortified stronghold built first by the Portuguese and later expanded by the Dutch and British, it took its name from the ramparts and bastions that originally enclosed the area, defences that have long since been dismantled to make way for the modern city growing around them.
Today, Colombo Fort is the country's commercial and administrative nerve centre, home to government buildings, major banks, and some of the city's oldest colonial-era architecture standing shoulder to shoulder with newer high-rises. Landmarks like the Old Dutch Hospital, the Cargills and Millers buildings, and the Clock Tower still carry the imprint of the area's layered past, while nearby, Colombo Fort railway station keeps the district firmly connected to the rest of the island as one of its busiest transport hubs.
Despite its name, little remains of the actual fort structure itself, most of it torn down under British rule as the city expanded beyond its old defensive walls. What's left instead is a district defined by contrast, colonial facades beside modern towers, quiet government offices near busy streets, a place that's shifted over centuries from a walled stronghold into the commercial core of Sri Lanka's capital, still carrying its old name as the only visible trace of what it once was.
