Just south of Unawatuna, on Sri Lanka's southern coast, a stretch of sand backed by leaning coconut palms and rounded black rocks has become one of the most photographed spots in the entire country, thanks largely to a single leaning palm tree. Dalawella forms a shallow, sheltered lagoon protected by rocky outcrops, and it's here, right in front of the Dream Cabana Guesthouse, that a rope swing hangs from a naturally bent palm, timed correctly it creates the illusion of swinging straight out toward the open ocean. What started as a simple beach feature went properly viral on Instagram, transforming what was once a quiet, secluded stretch of coast into one of Sri Lanka's most visited photo destinations.
Beyond the swing itself, Dalawella genuinely earns its reputation on other fronts too, the shallow lagoon regularly draws large green and hawksbill turtles swimming close enough to shore that they're visible without any real effort, a detail that keeps bringing visitors back even once the novelty of the swing photo wears off. A coral reef just offshore makes for decent snorkeling, best explored with your own gear since rental options remain limited, and the beach even offers some manageable waves for beginner and intermediate surfers, particularly during the calmer, drier months from November through April.
A short walk further along the coast brings you to Wijaya Rock, sometimes called Frog Rock, a dramatic chunk of stone jutting into the sea with its own bent palm tree growing alongside it, another popular sunset photo spot that pairs naturally with a Dalawella visit. Small guesthouses and beach cottages line the road skirting the shoreline, and a handful of casual cafes serve fresh seafood and simple Sri Lankan dishes, making Dalawella an easy, relaxed stop on the well traveled route between Galle and Mirissa.
