Dunhinda Falls
A powerful 64 metre waterfall known as the Bridal Falls for its constant misty spray, set in forest just outside Badulla town.
About 5 km from Badulla town, the Badulu Oya river drops 63 meters over a rocky ledge into a scene local folklore ties directly to Kandyan royal history. Tradition holds that during the reign of King Rajasinghe II, the river here was blocked by a giant creeper known as Kalu Wandura Wel, threatening to flood the surrounding paddy fields, and the king ordered it cleared away, the effort eventually unblocking the river's course and revealing the dramatic waterfall visitors see today, essentially a legend crediting royal intervention for the very existence of one of Sri Lanka's most beloved cascades.
Reaching the falls means a walk of roughly 2 km along a shaded jungle path from the main road, an approach filled with birdsong and dense greenery that builds anticipation well before the waterfall itself comes into view, the sound of rushing water growing steadily louder through the trees.
