Somewhere behind the golden roofs and crowds of Sri Dalada Maligawa, tucked into a quieter corner of the temple complex, there's a spot most visitors walk right past without realizing what it is. Ath Gala, the temple's elephant stable, houses the actual tuskers belonging to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, animals that aren't just kept for show but hold a role woven right into the island's religious life. Only a carefully chosen, elite tusker earns the honor of carrying the Tooth Relic casket, and once you understand that, the calm, almost ceremonial way these elephants carry themselves starts to make a lot more sense.
The temple currently keeps around nine tuskers and a handful of bull elephants, several donated by presidents, foreign royalty, and religious leaders over the decades, each arrival treated as its own small piece of history. One name still comes up more than any other, Raja, the legendary tusker who carried the sacred casket for 37 years straight, right through the last Randoli Perahera, celebrated for his composure and gentle nature until his death in 1988. He was declared a national treasure by President J. R. Jayewardene, appeared on a postage stamp and even the old 1000 rupee note, and his preserved remains still sit within the temple grounds today, a quiet, oddly moving tribute to one animal's decades of service.
Come Esala Perahera season, this whole stable becomes the starting point for something extraordinary. The [Maligawa]((/things-to-do/temple-of-the-sacred-tooth-relic)) Tusker, dressed in gold and jewels, leads the procession out from here carrying a replica of the Tooth Relic casket, followed by drummers, fire performers, and Kandyan dancers stretching the parade out for well over a kilometre through the streets of Kandy. Standing near Ath Gala outside festival season, watching the elephants rest, bathe or simply sway quietly in their enclosure, gives you a very different, far more intimate sense of these same animals than the spectacle of the parade ever could.
It's a small, easy to miss stop within a much bigger complex, but for anyone who's watched footage of the perahera or read about Raja's decades of devotion, seeing where it all actually starts adds a layer of meaning the temple's main shrine alone doesn't quite offer.
