Ella Rock
A tougher half-day hike to a 1,041 metre clifftop with a panorama across the Ella Gap. The trail follows the railway line before climbing through forest and tea estates.
Ella Rock is the big walk everyone in Ella talks about, and the one a fair few people get lost on. It's a climb of a few hours up to a clifftop at around 1,040 metres, where the land falls away and you get the wide view over the Ella Gap that makes the sweat worth it. Unlike Little Adam's Peak, which is a gentle stroll, this one asks a bit more of your legs, and of your sense of direction.
The route starts along the railway line south of Ella station. You walk the tracks for a while (keeping an ear out for trains, obviously), then peel off onto a path that climbs through tea estates and patches of forest to the top. The turn-off is famously easy to miss, and you'll likely be offered 'help' by locals along the way who then expect a tip. None of this is a problem if you're relaxed about it, but it catches people out.
Most walkers set off before dawn to reach the top for sunrise, when the valley is still cool and often filled with cloud that burns off as the sun comes up. Give yourself three to four hours there and back, wear proper shoes rather than flip-flops, and take water, there's nowhere to buy any once you leave town. It's the kind of morning you remember, provided you don't spend half of it standing at a fork in the path arguing about which way is up.

Getting there
Follow the railway track south from Ella station for about 45 minutes, then take the marked path up through the tea estate.
Before you go
- Start early, for sunrise if you can. By late morning the view often clouds over and the climb gets hot.
- Download an offline map (or hire a local guide at the start). The turn-off from the railway is genuinely easy to miss.
- Wear shoes with grip. The last stretch is steep and can be slippery after rain.
- Carry your own water and a snack. There are no shops on the trail, only the odd person selling tea near the top.
Frequently asked questions
- How hard is the Ella Rock hike?
- It's moderate, not technical, but a real uphill effort of three to four hours return with some steep sections near the end. If you're reasonably fit you'll be fine. If you want something easy, Little Adam's Peak is the gentler choice.
- Do I need a guide?
- You can do it without one, and plenty of people do, but the route isn't well signed and the railway turn-off trips a lot of walkers up. A cheap local guide or a good offline map saves you the wrong-turn frustration.
- Is it free?
- Yes, the walk itself costs nothing. You only spend money if you hire a guide or buy tea at the top.
- What should I bring?
- Water, a snack, decent shoes, a light layer for the cool early start, and a torch if you're walking up in the dark for sunrise.
