Galle Face Green
A breezy oceanfront promenade in the heart of Colombo, a half-kilometre lawn beside the sea where the city gathers at dusk for kite-flying, street food and sunsets.
Galle Face Green is a 5 hectare lawn running about 500 metres along the seafront in the heart of Colombo, between the Fort and Kollupitiya. It was laid out as a promenade in 1859 under Governor Sir Henry Ward, though the land had already been used as a racecourse for decades, and it later hosted golf, rugby and cricket. The very first Royal Thomian cricket match was played here in 1879. At the southern end stands the Galle Face Hotel, open since 1864 and billed as one of the oldest hotels east of Suez.
During the day and early evening, Galle Face Green feels pretty safe, families out and about, food vendors doing brisk business, and police keeping an eye on things. Just watch out for the occasional aggressive panhandler or scam, and be a bit more careful late at night when parts of it get dark and empty.
Galle Face Green in Colombo is where kites drift over the promenade, street vendors serve up prawn fritters, and the evening ends with the sun sinking into the ocean. If you want to relax, unwind and enjoy the sunset, the best time to visit is between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Worth knowing: Galle Face Beach isn't suited for swimming. Strong waves, unpredictable currents, and the absence of lifeguards make the water genuinely unsafe.
The Green is also where Sri Lanka holds its national day celebrations every 4 February, and in 2022 it became the site of the protest camp at the centre of that year's demonstrations. Most evenings, though, it's simply the city's living room. Pair a walk here with Galle Face Pier for a view back along the shore, or head into Port City, where Port City Beach is sheltered and swimming is allowed.
