Galway's Land National Park

Galway’s Land National Park is a beautiful protected forest reserve located near Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka. Covering a small but ecologically important area in the central highlands, the park is known for its rich biodiversity, peaceful forest environment, and cool mountain climate. It provides a refreshing natural escape from the busy surroundings of the town.

Tucked within Nuwara Eliya's own city limits, just a few kilometres from the town center, Galway's Land ranks among the smallest national parks in Sri Lanka, a modest 27 to 57 hectare pocket of montane forest that still manages to pull in serious birdwatchers from across the island. Declared a wildlife sanctuary back in 1938, it was formally upgraded to national park status in 2006, recognized specifically for protecting a genuine montane ecosystem within an otherwise developed urban area.

The park holds somewhere between 10 and 30 endemic bird species depending on the season, alongside wild boar and barking deer moving quietly through the undergrowth, and migratory birds arriving in numbers during the November to March monsoon season. A clearly marked walking trail winds up through the mountainous terrain, manageable without a guide though many visitors hire one locally to help spot and identify species that are otherwise easy to miss.

Reviews on Galway's Land run genuinely mixed, some visitors leave delighted after a productive morning of bird-watching, others report quiet mornings with barely a bird in sight, a reminder that wildlife sightings here depend heavily on timing, weather and a bit of luck. Paired with neighboring Victoria Park, it's still considered one of the more significant birding sites in the country, a compact, walk-able slice of protected highland ecosystem right within a town otherwise built around gardens and tea.

How to get there

Galway's Land National Park sits on Havelock Road in Nuwara Eliya, roughly 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) east of the town center. You can reach it via a 5 to 10-minute drive or a 30-minute walk from the city. Local tuk-tuks charge around 200 to 300 LKR.
