Galway's Land National Park

Tucked within Nuwara Eliya's own city limits, just a few kilometres from the town center, Galway's Land ranks among the smallest national parks in Sri Lanka, a modest 27 to 57 hectare pocket of montane forest that still manages to pull in serious birdwatchers from across the island. Declared a wildlife sanctuary back in 1938, it was formally upgraded to national park status in 2006, recognised specifically for protecting a genuine montane ecosystem within an otherwise developed urban area.
The park holds somewhere between 10 and 30 endemic bird species depending on the season, alongside wild boar and barking deer moving quietly through the undergrowth, and migratory birds arriving in numbers during the November to March monsoon season. A clearly marked walking trail winds up through the mountainous terrain, manageable without a guide though many visitors hire one locally to help spot and identify species that are otherwise easy to miss.
