On the slopes of Hakgala Rock, a short drive from Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka's second largest botanical garden spreads across land with a history that reaches back far beyond its founding as a garden. According to the Ramayana, Hakgala is said to be a fragment of the Himalayan mountain that fell here when Hanuman, carrying medicinal herbs, dropped a piece of the mountain during his journey, giving this stretch of highland a mythological weight most botanical gardens simply don't carry. The garden itself was established in 1861, originally intended for cinchona cultivation, the plant used to produce quinine, before shifting focus toward experimental tea planting and eventually developing into the diverse botanical collection visitors explore today.
Spread across roughly 28 hectares at an elevation over 1,700 meters, Hakgala's cooler climate supports plant life that simply wouldn't survive in Sri Lanka's lowlands, an extensive rose garden considered among the finest on the island, ferneries, orchid houses, and a Japanese style garden section that adds an unexpected layer of design variety to the grounds. Sitting adjacent to the Hakgala Strict Nature Reserve, the garden also borders genuine highland forest, meaning the line between manicured cultivation and wild montane ecosystem blurs pleasantly the further you wander from the main entrance.
