In the center of Jaffna, a striking white building built in the style of ancient Dravidian architecture holds a history that carries genuine weight in Sri Lanka's modern national memory. Established in 1933, the Jaffna Public Library grew steadily through community fundraising and donations into one of the largest and best equipped libraries anywhere in South Asia, its main building opening in 1959 with guidance from the prominent Indian librarian S.R. Ranganathan, eventually housing nearly 97,000 volumes, including centuries old Tamil palm leaf manuscripts found nowhere else on earth, among them the only surviving copy of the Yalpanam Vaipavamalai, a foundational history of Jaffna itself.
On the night of May 31, 1981, during a period of heightened political tension around district elections, an organized mob of Sinhalese police officers and civilians, reportedly directed there by senior government ministers, set the library ablaze in an act widely regarded as a deliberate attempt at cultural erasure. The entire collection burned within hours, an irreplaceable loss of Tamil literary, religious and historical material that many historians point to as a pivotal moment pushing Sri Lanka toward full scale civil war just two years later.
Rebuilding began under President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, funded substantially by the inter-communal Sudu Nelum Movement at a cost of roughly 700 million Sri Lankan rupees, the library partially reopening in 1984 and reaching full restoration by 2003. Today the rebuilt library functions as both a working institution, students studying at its desks, shelves once again filled with books, and a quiet memorial to what was lost, its very existence a testament to cultural resilience even as the original collection itself can never truly be recovered.
