Kanneliya Rainforest Reserve
A lush lowland rainforest inland from Galle, a UNESCO biosphere rich in endemic birds, frogs and trees, with trails to waterfalls and forest pools.
About 35 km northeast of Galle, spreading across roughly 5,306 hectares, Kanneliya stands as the largest reserve within the Kanneliya-Dediyagala-Nakiyadeniya complex, better known simply as KDN, the last remaining sizeable rainforest in Sri Lanka after the more famous Sinharaja. UNESCO designated the wider KDN complex a Biosphere Reserve in 2004, recognizing it as one of South Asia's most valuable forest resources, and standing at the source of both the Gin Ganga and Nilwala Ganga rivers, Kanneliya essentially feeds two of the south's major waterways from its own dense, undisturbed canopy.
The numbers here genuinely impress, over 220 recorded fauna species, including 86 mammals, 36 snakes and 26 birds, 20 of the latter found nowhere else but this forest, alongside 301 recorded plant species, a quarter of them endemic to the island. Trails range widely in ambition, the manageable Cave Trail covers 1.6 km in about an hour, while the demanding Kabbale Mountain Trail stretches 5.5 km and takes a full six hours, considered the toughest trek in the whole reserve. Waterfalls scattered throughout, Anagimale Ella near the entrance, Narangas Ella further in, Malamura closer to nearby Pannagala village, give hikers natural rest points and cooling dips along the way.
A guide isn't strictly mandatory, but it's genuinely worth hiring one, both for spotting wildlife easily missed by untrained eyes and for staying safely on correct trails through terrain that shifted historically between primary and secondary forest due to past logging. Freshwater bathing spots dot the reserve too, some home to fish species found only here, making Kanneliya less a quick photo stop and more a proper day, or multi day, immersion into one of the last genuinely wild corners of southern Sri Lanka.
