Kayts Island

West of Jaffna town, connected to the mainland by a causeway, Kayts sits within the low lying Velanai Islands group, a quiet, rarely crowded cluster of islands that offers a genuine glimpse into the rhythms of Tamil coastal life away from the busier parts of the peninsula. The island's most historically significant structure is its colonial era fort, originally built by the Portuguese in 1629 to control sea approaches into the Jaffna peninsula, a strategic position that made Kayts an important defensive point for whichever colonial power held the north.
The Portuguese abandoned the fort in 1651, after which the Dutch assumed control of the island, though unlike Jaffna's grander main fort, Kayts' fortification received comparatively little restoration under Dutch governance and remains today largely in ruins, a modest, unsignposted relic best appreciated by visitors with a genuine interest in colonial military architecture rather than a polished heritage site. The island's religious landscape reflects its layered history too, Saiva Hindu temples including the Karampon Shanmuganathar Temple sitting alongside historic Christian churches like St. James', a legacy of both Portuguese and Dutch colonial religious influence.
Like much of the Jaffna Peninsula, Kayts endured real disruption during the civil war, periods of restricted access and displacement altering daily life for the island's fishing and trading communities, with gradual resettlement and economic recovery following the war's end in 2009. Easily reached as a half day trip from Jaffna city, Kayts today offers travelers calm, shallow waters, flat palmyra dotted landscapes, and a quiet window into a part of northern Sri Lanka that still sees relatively few outside visitors.
