Standing second only to Rankoth Vehera in scale among Polonnaruwa's great stupas, Kiri Vehera holds the distinction of being one of the best preserved ancient monuments anywhere in the ancient city, its brilliant white surface entirely intact centuries after construction. Built during the reign of King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century, the stupa's name translates literally to Milk Stupa, a description that captures both its pristine limewashed coating and the genuinely luminous quality it retains under the tropical sun, unlike many neighboring monuments that have lost their original plaster to time.
