Along Sri Lanka's southeastern coast, close to Tissamaharama, a rocky outcrop rises directly from the shoreline, crowned by a temple whose story reaches back to one of the most dramatic legends in Sri Lankan history. Kirinda Viharaya marks, by tradition, the exact spot where Queen Viharamahadevi came ashore after being set adrift at sea, a sacrifice her father King Kelanitissa made to the ocean as penance after wrongfully killing a monk. She survived the journey, later marrying King Kavantissa, and their son would grow up to become King Dutugemunu, the warrior king who reunified ancient Sri Lanka, making Kirinda the literal starting point of one of the island's most foundational royal narratives.
A statue of the queen stands near the temple today, marking her legendary landing point, while the temple itself, built atop the rock with the Indian Ocean stretching out on every side, offers genuinely striking views back over the coastline.
