Kollupitiya Beach is a slice of open sea right in the middle of Colombo 03. Step off the busy streets of Kollupitiya, cross over to the shoreline and the city suddenly feels a lot more spacious.
It's a simple, local stretch of coast rather than a sunbathing beach. The coastal railway line runs close to the shore, and the waves roll in steadily along the rocks and sand. People come here to walk, catch the sea breeze and watch the day end over the Indian Ocean.
Sunset is the highlight. As evening falls, the sky turns gold and orange, and the light reflecting off the water makes it one of the easiest places in Colombo to grab a good photo without going far.
Take care near the railway, and only cross at proper crossing points. The sea here is better admired than swum in, as the currents along the city's coast can be strong.
Entry is free, and the shore is open at all times. Around two hours is enough for a relaxed walk and the sunset. Afterwards, you're only a short walk from the restaurants and cafés of Kollupitiya and Galle Road.
The beach runs parallel to Marine Drive. It's about a 10-minute bus ride along Galle Road from central Colombo, a short taxi or tuk-tuk ride, or roughly a 45-minute walk if you prefer to take it slow.
