Marakolliya Beach
A wild, near-empty stretch of sand and lagoon east of Tangalle backed by mangroves, one of the most peaceful beaches on the south coast.
A short walk or tuk-tuk ride beyond Tangalle's busier Medaketiya strip, Marakolliya unfolds as a genuinely long, golden stretch of sand, backed by palm trees and shelving gently into turquoise water, the kind of scene that regularly gets described by visitors as some of the most beautiful coastline in the entire country. What sets it apart from its more developed neighbor is simply how much quieter it stays, the further you walk from Tangalle town, the more the beach empties out, facilities thin to almost nothing, and the whole stretch takes on a genuinely deserted, untouched character.
Nearby mangroves add another layer worth exploring beyond just the beach itself, a short detour inland revealing a very different ecosystem, still water and dense green growth standing in contrast to the open sand and surf just steps away. A single beachside restaurant or two provide the only real infrastructure along much of the beach, meaning most visitors treat Marakolliya as a destination for walking, swimming and simply sitting rather than a spot built around amenities.
Like much of this coastline, Marakolliya bore real damage during the 2004 tsunami, its infrastructure and surrounding area since restored, though the beach's essential character, wide, golden and genuinely peaceful, has remained largely intact through that recovery. For travelers who've found Medaketiya too lively, Marakolliya offers the quieter alternative just a short stroll further down the same coastline.
