Mining here remains a genuinely hands on, low tech affair, shafts run roughly 10 feet long and 5 feet wide, reinforced with coconut trunks and wooden beams to prevent collapse as digging goes deeper, horizontal tunnels eventually branching off to extract the stone once workers reach sufficient depth. Water seepage is a near constant challenge, addressed with a pair of pumps, one draining water, the other clearing the muddy soil that carries the gems. Watching miners work with nothing more than shovels and pickaxes, extracting moonstone using techniques passed down through generations, offers a rare, unfiltered look at gemstone mining rarely visible behind the polished showroom doors found elsewhere in the trade.
