Moon Plains
A rolling stretch of grassland above Nuwara Eliya with its own mini World's End viewpoint and free-roaming deer, reached by jeep across the meadows.
About 6 km outside Nuwara Eliya, in a spot most visitors never expect much from, sits a viewpoint with a genuinely unlikely backstory. Moon Plains, locally known as Sandathenna, used to be a garbage dump before the area was cleaned up and reconditioned around 2010, then officially declared an Agricultural and Environmental Tourism Zone by the local municipality in 2014. What was once discarded land has turned into one of the more loved biodiversity spots in the whole hill country, proof that a place's past doesn't always dictate its future.
The valley itself stretches roughly 400 meters long and 40 meters deep, sitting at an elevation around 6,200 feet, which explains why mist and chilly air roll through so often here. Wander the grounds and you'll likely spot deer, wild boar, buffalo and cows moving across the slopes, along with a genuinely impressive count of bird species, 105 recorded in total, 16 of them found nowhere else but Sri Lanka.
The main draw for most visitors is Mini World's End, a sharp drop offering a 360 degree sweep across nine surrounding peaks, Pidurutalagala, Kirigalpoththa, Thotupola and several others, all visible in one uninterrupted view when conditions cooperate. Getting up to the viewpoint itself means switching to specially authorised jeeps for the final stretch, since personal vehicles aren't permitted, a small extra step that adds to the sense of heading somewhere pleasantly removed from the ordinary tourist trail.
