Keerimalai Naguleswaram Temple
One of the five ancient Shiva temples of the island, a revered northern shrine beside the Keerimalai springs, restored after wartime damage.
Immediately beside the Keerimalai Springs, Naguleswaram Temple stands as one of the Pancha Ishwarams, the five ancient and most sacred Shiva temples scattered around Sri Lanka's coastline, this one holding the distinction of being the northernmost among them. Tradition credits Prince Vijaya of Vanga with restoring the temple around the 6th century BCE, and its history stretches back further still through layers of legend, the Sanskrit Suta Samhita of the Skanda Purana referencing Naguleswaram as an ancient pilgrimage site as early as the 6th century CE, while the celebrated 15th century Tamil poet Arunagirinathar composed hymns dedicated to Lord Murugan of this very temple.
The temple's story carries real tragedy from the modern era too. The Portuguese destroyed much of the original structure following their conquest of the Jaffna kingdom, and it wasn't restored until 1894, under the guidance of the Tamil scholar and reformer Arumuka Navalar. Far more recent violence followed during the civil war, the Sri Lankan military occupying the temple grounds from 1983, and in October 1990, air force bombing raids struck the complex twice within two days, the second attack falling during a major religious observance attended by thousands of devotees, killing 180 Tamil civilians including five infants, a devastating chapter in the temple's long history that remains a painful memory for the surrounding community.
Despite that trauma, Naguleswaram has continued to draw devotees for its ancient sanctity and its direct connection to the healing waters of Keerimalai next door, the temple's survival across Portuguese destruction, colonial neglect and modern conflict standing as its own quiet testament to the resilience of the faith it's served for well over two thousand years.
