Namunukula Peak
The highest peak in the Uva highlands at 2,036 metres, a ridge whose name means nine peaks, with huge views over Badulla, Ella and, on clear days, the east coast.
East of Ella and Badulla, forming the eastern boundary of Sri Lanka's famous Uva tea growing belt, the Namunukula range stretches roughly 13 km from north to south, its Sinhala name translating to Nine Peaks, a reference to the entire jagged ridge rather than any single summit within it. The range's highest point, standing at 2,035 meters, ranks as the 12th tallest peak anywhere in Sri Lanka and also happens to share its name with both the wider mountain range and a small village sitting on its southern slope, a naming overlap that occasionally confuses first time visitors trying to pin down exactly which Namunukula they mean.
Horton Plains closes off the region to the west, while Namunukula itself forms the natural eastern boundary, the two together bookending the Uva tea country across a roughly 40 km east-west span, with Spring Valley, a working tea plantation area, occupying the mountain's northern flanks and connecting directly to Badulla town below. Hiking the range has become genuinely popular among more adventurous travelers, the most accessible route starting from the 3rd Mile Post on the Passara-Badulla Road, vehicles able to reach as far as the mountain's base in the Deyangalla division before hikers continue on foot, and the dry months are strongly recommended for the climb, since reduced rainfall means considerably fewer leeches along the trail.
The summit rewards climbers with genuinely spectacular views in both morning and evening light, and its cold, exposed character has made it a popular spot for camping among hikers willing to spend a night at altitude, though visitors are advised to carry plenty of water given the complete absence of clean sources anywhere along the ascent, a genuinely demanding but rewarding climb that ranks among the more serious hiking challenges in Sri Lanka's southern hill country.
