Nilaveli Beach
A long, wide sweep of pale sand and calm turquoise water north of Trincomalee, the most famous beach on the east coast and the gateway to Pigeon Island.
Nilaveli is the beach that made Trincomalee's name, a long, wide run of pale sand and shallow, warm, improbably blue water on the east coast north of town. It runs on the opposite calendar to the south coast, which is its whole appeal: when Mirissa and Unawatuna are being churned up by the monsoon from May onward, Nilaveli is at its calmest and clearest.
It's a proper swimming and lazing beach. The water stays shallow a long way out and is usually gentle, so it suits families and anyone who just wants to float rather than fight the surf. The beach is long enough that even when the guesthouses are busy you can walk five minutes and have a stretch of sand largely to yourself. Boats to Pigeon Island, the snorkelling reef just offshore, leave from here, which is the other reason most people base themselves at Nilaveli.
It's quieter and more spread out than Uppuveli, its livelier neighbour closer to town, fewer bars, more space, a slower pace. Sunrise over the water is the moment worth setting an alarm for. Pair a few beach days here with a snorkel trip to Pigeon Island and a run into Trincomalee for Koneswaram temple and Fort Frederick, and you've got a complete, unhurried east-coast stay.
