Nuwara Eliya Post Office

Right in the center of town on Queen Elizabeth Drive, a red brick building with a distinctive clock tower stands as one of the most photographed structures in all of Nuwara Eliya. Built in 1894 in classic Tudor style, the post office has quietly operated for well over a century, its red brick exterior and spiraling clock tower giving it an unmistakable silhouette against the town's misty hillside backdrop.
It's more than just a functioning post office too, it's become something of a symbol for the whole Little England identity Nuwara Eliya carries, a tangible piece of colonial architecture that's survived largely unchanged while the town around it has grown and modernized. Visitors often stop simply to photograph the building from the street, its old world charm standing out even among Nuwara Eliya's broader collection of colonial era architecture.
For anyone tracing the town's British heritage on foot, alongside stops like the Grand Hotel, Victoria Park and the old Racecourse, the post office rounds out the picture nicely, still doing exactly the job it was built for well over a hundred years ago, a rare case of colonial architecture that never stopped being useful.
The building was handed over to the postal department in 1894 and has been handling mail ever since. It's a two storey red brick building in Tudor style, topped by a clock spire, and it even appeared on a Sri Lankan postage stamp in 1990.
Its future wasn't always certain. In 2024, a proposal to turn the building into a hotel drew protests, and the government responded by saying it would stay in use as a post office. So it's still very much a working post office, not a museum piece.
The nicest thing to do here is also the simplest. Bring a postcard, buy a stamp at the counter and send it home from one of the oldest working post offices in the country. I'd go on a weekday morning, when the counters are open and the street outside is quieter for photos.
