Nuwara Eliya Town (Little England)

High in Sri Lanka's central hills, Nuwara Eliya carries a nickname that says almost everything about it, Little England, earned honestly rather than as a marketing gimmick. The town was founded around 1846 by Samuel Baker, and British officials soon began building villas and cottages across its hilly terrain to escape the humid lowland heat, discovering along the way that the cool climate and rolling terrain reminded them unmistakably of home. Sir Edward Barnes, the fifth British governor of Ceylon, built an early holiday home here called Barnes Hall back in 1828, setting the tone for what would become a full colonial retreat.
What followed was a wholesale transplant of English leisure culture into the Sri Lankan hills, golf courses, horse racing tracks, churches, and Tudor style mansions, many still standing today, some converted into boutique hotels that keep their original colonial façades intact. The Grand Hotel remains the most evocative survivor, a sprawling, century old property still serving formal high tea each afternoon, waiters in waistcoats and white gloves included, an experience that feels lifted directly out of Victorian England rather than tropical Asia.
Beyond the architecture, the town's identity runs deeper than aesthetics, tea itself built Nuwara Eliya's fortunes, English and Scottish planters turning the surrounding hills into some of the world's most prized tea growing land. Walking its streets today, past Victoria Park, the old Racecourse, Lake Gregory and rows of colorful colonial buildings tiering down misty hillsides, it's easy to understand why visitors consistently describe Nuwara Eliya as feeling like nowhere else in Sri Lanka.
