About 3 km east of Nuwara Eliya, Pedro Tea Estate sits close enough to town that visitors often find themselves surrounded by working tea fields before they've even fully left the urban edge of the hill station. Named after Pidurutalagala, Sri Lanka's tallest peak looming nearby, the estate traces its roots back to the colonial era, when Scottish planters first recognised just how well suited this climate and elevation were for growing tea, gradually transforming dense forest into the neat, contoured rows that now define so much of the surrounding landscape.
A factory tour here walks visitors through the full production process, and it's common to see tea pickers actively working the fields during a visit, baskets on their backs, moving methodically through the bushes in a scene that hasn't changed dramatically in over a century. The scenery is really the draw as much as the industry itself, layered green hillsides stretching out in every direction, framed by the cool, misty air Nuwara Eliya is known for.
Its proximity to town makes Pedro one of the easiest tea estates to fold into a short Nuwara Eliya itinerary, requiring far less of a detour than some of the estates further out along the main highway, while still delivering a genuine, hands on look at how Ceylon tea actually gets made.
