Pettah Floating Market
The Pettah Floating Market in Colombo, Sri Lanka, features around 92 trade stalls set along wooden boardwalks and fixed platforms on the restored Beira Lake. Opened in 2014 on Bastian Mawatha, it offers local clothes, shoes, electronics, and small food kiosks, though these days many of the shops sit empty or closed.
The floating market and its surrounding beautification works were carried out by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) at a cost of Rs. 150 million. Engineering units from the Sri Lanka Army, working alongside the UDA, transformed Bastian Street, the road linking the Central Bus Stand in Pettah with Colombo Fort railway station, into a green, tree-lined space. Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Navy took on the job of rehabilitating the polluted canal running alongside it. The stalls themselves, designed by Thushari Kariyawasam, keep things simple, with grey cemented floors and minimalist décor meant to echo the calm, undisturbed water of the lake. Source - Wikipedia
