Pettah Floating Market
Stalls on wooden boardwalks over Beira Lake beside Fort station, opened in 2014. Many shops are now closed, so treat it as a waterside walk.
Pettah is famous for crowds, noise and endless shopping, so the Pettah Floating Market comes as a surprise. Here, the stalls sit on wooden boardwalks and fixed platforms over the restored water of Beira Lake, giving this busy corner of the city a surprisingly calm edge.
The market opened in 2014 as part of a wider effort to clean up and green the area. The Urban Development Authority led the project, with help from the Sri Lankan armed forces. Army engineers turned Bastian Street, the road that links Pettah's Central Bus Stand with Fort railway station, into a tree-lined walkway, while the Navy took on the job of cleaning up the polluted canal beside it.
The stalls themselves are simple by design, with plain cement floors and minimal decoration meant to reflect the stillness of the water. You'll find clothes, shoes, small electronics and a few food kiosks.
It's worth being honest, though: these days many of the shops sit empty or closed, so don't expect a busy market. It's better treated as a pleasant waterside walk and a quiet break between Pettah's markets and the station.
Entry is free, and the walkways are open from 8am to 10:30pm. Evenings are the nicest time to visit, when the lights reflect on the water. If you're catching a train or bus nearby, it's an easy detour. Fort railway station is just across the road, and the long distance bus stands of Pettah are at the other end of the walkway, so this is a handy place to sit for a while before a train or bus. From here the crowded lanes of Pettah Market start a few minutes' walk away, and the contrast between the two, the quiet water on one side and the noise of the market streets on the other, is half the reason to come.
