Piduruthalagala Mountain
The highest mountain in Sri Lanka at 2,524 metres, rising above Nuwara Eliya with a summit radar station and, on a clear day, views across much of the island.
North of Nuwara Eliya town, rising to 2,524 meters, Pidurutalagala stands as the highest point in all of Sri Lanka, its name translating roughly to Straw Plateau Rock, a reference to how the summit's dried grass takes on a golden, straw like look during dry weather. Known during the colonial period as Mount Pedro, the mountain towers over Nuwara Eliya and remains visible from most corners of the Central Province, an unmissable backdrop to the entire hill station below.
Unlike most peaks that reward hikers with open access, Pidurutalagala's summit houses the country's central communications array and military radar installations, making it a designated ultra high security zone, permanently off limits to the general public. Access rules shift unpredictably too, some months allow visitors up the access road as far as the fenced complex, others restrict entry entirely, and the uncertainty means most travellers simply admire the mountain from below rather than plan an ascent around it.
That restriction hasn't dimmed its role in local geography though, it forms the watershed feeding both Devon and St. Clair's Falls, and its slopes support genuine biodiversity, purple faced langurs, whistling thrush, even leopards moving quietly through forest that few visitors will ever walk. For most, Pidurutalagala remains something to look up at rather than climb, a constant, looming presence over Nuwara Eliya rather than a summit to tick off.
