Pigeon Island National Park

Pigeon Island is a small rocky island a short boat ride off Nilaveli, and one of the best places in Sri Lanka to get your face in the water and actually see something. It's a marine national park, which means the reef around it is protected, and on a good day you can snorkel over coral gardens busy with tropical fish, sea turtles and, the real draw for a lot of people, harmless blacktip reef sharks cruising the shallows.
The trip is easy: a fifteen-minute boat hop from Nilaveli beach drops you on the island, and the best snorkelling is just off the shore. You don't need to be a strong swimmer to enjoy the shallow reef, though experienced snorkellers and divers can head out to deeper coral. Bring your own mask if you're fussy about fit. The rental gear on the beach is fine but well used.
A word of honesty: the reef has taken a battering over the years from bleaching and from too many careless visitors standing on the coral, so it's not the untouched paradise some brochures promise. It's still genuinely good, especially in the calm season from May to October, but it's worth being part of the solution: reef-safe sunscreen, no touching, no standing on the coral. Go early for the clearest water and the fewest boats.

Getting there
A short boat ride off Nilaveli beach, about 16km north of Trincomalee.
Before you go
- Go early in the morning for the calmest, clearest water and before the boats and crowds build up.
- Bring or hire snorkel gear. If you're picky about a mask fitting well, bring your own.
- Wear reef-safe sunscreen and never touch or stand on the coral, the reef is fragile and already stressed.
- The season runs roughly May to October, when the east coast sea is calm. Outside that the crossing can be rough.
