Polgolla Dam is a significant hydroelectric and irrigation project located near Kandy, Sri Lanka, built across the Mahaweli River. Polgolla Dam, officially the Polgolla Barrage, is a quiet stop just north of Kandy where engineering and scenery meet. Built across the Mahaweli, Sri Lanka's longest river, it's a place many travellers drive past without realising how important it is.
The barrage was built as part of the Mahaweli Development Programme, one of the country's biggest engineering projects. Its job is to divert part of the river's flow, which is then used to generate electricity and to supply water to farming areas across the drier parts of the island. So while it looks calm on the surface, a lot of Sri Lanka depends on what happens here.
For visitors, the appeal is the setting. The dam holds back the Polgolla Reservoir, a wide stretch of water framed by green hills, and the views across it are lovely, especially in soft morning or evening light. It's a relaxed place for photos and a short break from Kandy's traffic.
There's no entry fee, and around an hour is plenty. The dry season from December to March usually brings clearer skies and better views. Stay behind any barriers, and never go near the water close to the gates, as flows can change quickly.
The dam sits roughly 6 to 8 km north of Kandy. It's about a 20 to 25 minute drive or tuk-tuk ride from the clock tower area, via Katugastota or Watapuluwa.
