Potgul Vihara
A circular brick library and monastery on the shore of Parakrama Samudra, thought to have stored sacred manuscripts, with fine acoustics under its once-domed hall.
Near the banks of Parakrama Samudra, a short distance south of the disputed royal or sage statue, Potgul Vihara presents one of the more architecturally unusual monastic complexes anywhere in ancient Polonnaruwa, four small stupas arranged symmetrically around a central circular building set on a raised platform. British archaeologist H.C.P. Bell, who first excavated the site, proposed that this circular structure corresponds to what the ancient chronicles describe as the Mandalamandira, or circle house, built by King Parakramabahu specifically as a space for listening to the Jataka tales, stories of the Buddha's past lives, as recited by a teacher, a purpose that would explain both the building's unusual round shape and its otherwise puzzling isolation from Polonnaruwa's main temple clusters.
Traditionally identified as an ancient monastic library, a role reflected in the name Potgul, meaning book house, the site's central plastered chamber retains genuinely excellent acoustics even today, despite its roof having collapsed centuries ago, a detail that lends real credibility to the theory that this space was designed specifically for oral recitation and teaching rather than simple book storage. The four surrounding stupas, smaller in scale than Polonnaruwa's grand monuments elsewhere in the city, create a deliberate, contemplative symmetry around the central hall, suggesting a carefully planned space meant for quiet religious instruction rather than public devotion or pilgrimage.
Set in a genuinely peaceful location along the reservoir's edge, away from the busier clusters of ruins near the Quadrangle and Alahana Pirivena, Potgul Vihara offers visitors a quieter, more contemplative stop, a place that, whatever its precise original function, clearly valued acoustics and atmosphere as much as architecture, a monastery built for the sound of teaching as much as the sight of devotion.
