Ramboda Falls
A tall twin-stream waterfall dropping over 100 metres beside the A5 highway on the climb to Nuwara Eliya, easily seen from the road and a nearby viewpoint.
Along the A5 highway between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, Ramboda Falls cascades down in two distinct tiers totaling around 109 meters, ranking among the tallest waterfalls in Sri Lanka. Formed by the Panna Oya, a tributary that eventually joins the greater Kotmale river system, the falls carry their own local legend, said to be where Hanuman searched for medicinal herbs during the Ramayana, tying this waterfall into the same mythological landscape that runs through much of the surrounding hill country.
The upper section of the falls is easily visible from the main highway, making Ramboda a natural stop for anyone driving the Kandy to Nuwara Eliya route, but the fuller, more dramatic view comes from descending a set of steps that lead down toward the base, where the full drop and the force of the water become properly apparent. A small Hindu shrine sits near the base of the falls too, reflecting the site's spiritual associations, and a viewing platform partway down offers a solid vantage point for those who don't want to commit to the full descent.
Ramboda's location right along one of Sri Lanka's most travelled hill country routes means it works easily as a quick stop rather than a dedicated excursion, yet the height and force of the falls, especially during wetter months, consistently surprises visitors who expected just another brief roadside waterfall rather than one of the tallest cascades on the island.
