Sea Turtle Hatchery

A conservation hatchery on the south coast that protects turtle eggs, cares for injured turtles and releases hatchlings, with tanks you can visit and learn from.

Along the coast near Habaraduwa and Koggala, a handful of small, non profit hatcheries work quietly to protect one of Sri Lanka's most vulnerable marine species, collecting eggs laid on nearby beaches, incubating them safely, and eventually releasing the hatchlings back into the ocean under far better odds than nature alone would offer. The most established of these, the Habaraduwa hatchery, has been running since 1986, and has released several hundred thousand turtles back into the wild over its decades of operation, a genuinely significant conservation record for a relatively modest facility.

Beyond hatching and release, these centers double as rescue hospitals, tending to turtles injured by fishing gear, boat strikes, and ocean pollution, with several species regularly on site, Olive Ridley, Green, Hawksbill, and occasionally Loggerhead or Leatherback turtles depending on the season. Knowledgeable guides walk visitors through the life cycle of sea turtles and the threats they face, and depending on timing, guests often get the chance to gently hold a turtle or personally release a hatchling into the surf, watching it scramble determinedly toward the waves, an experience most visitors describe as genuinely moving rather than just another photo opportunity.

Turtle hatching season runs roughly November through May, peaking between January and March, making that window the best time to see the process in full swing, though the hatcheries operate and welcome visitors year round regardless of season.
