Sober Island
A small island in Trincomalee's great natural harbour with colonial naval history, an old Admiral's house and reputedly the oldest cricket pitch outside Britain.
Within Trincomalee's expansive natural harbor, a 175 acre island rising nearly 200 meters above sea level has carried genuine strategic weight since the 17th century, its layered colonial history stretching from French occupation through Dutch contest to eventual British control. Admiral Jacob Blaquet de la Haye first occupied the island in 1672, followed by Admiral Suffren in 1782, the French referring to it as Isle du Soleil, meaning Island of the Sun, before the British formally took control following the Treaty of Paris in 1784 and developed it for their own military purposes.
The island's English name carries a small, poignant story of its own, named in memory of a young British Lieutenant named S. Sober, and during World War II, as Trincomalee became home to the British Eastern Fleet, the island was fortified with a battery of coastal guns to defend the harbor against Japanese naval threats, functioning simultaneously as a transit station for thousands of soldiers passing through en route to the Far East and Mediterranean theaters. Remnants of that military past remain scattered across the island today, French graves, World War II gun positions, and underground ammunition storage complexes still visible among the ruins.
Today, Sober Island operates as a resort managed by the Sri Lankan Navy, access permitted only through the Navy camp and by boat, offering visitors luxury chalets set amid lush jungle and pristine beaches alongside activities like supervised kayaking in the harbor's calm waters. That blend of natural beauty, restricted access, and genuinely deep military history gives Sober Island a character unlike almost anywhere else in Trincomalee, part getaway, part open air museum to more than three centuries of contested colonial control over one of the world's finest natural harbors.
