St. Clair's Falls | Saint Clair
One of the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka, once called the Little Niagara of the East, spilling in broad curtains across the valley near Talawakele.
Along the road between Nuwara Eliya and Talawakele, often called the "Little Niagara of Sri Lanka," St. Clair's Falls drops in two distinct, separated cascades that together form one of the widest waterfalls on the island. Fed by the Kotmale Oya, a tributary of the Mahaweli River, the falls plunge roughly 80 meters down a broad rock face, framed on all sides by dense tea plantations that climb the surrounding hillsides in neat, contoured rows. The pairing of raw cascading water against that manicured green backdrop is exactly what's made this spot such a popular photo stop along the hill country route.
Unlike many of Sri Lanka's waterfalls that require a real trek to reach, St. Clair's Falls is genuinely roadside, visible clearly from a designated viewpoint just off the main highway, making it one of the more accessible dramatic sights in the entire region. That accessibility does mean it draws a steady stream of visitors and tour vehicles throughout the day, tour buses stopping briefly en route between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, so the viewpoint rarely stays quiet for long. A small stretch of shops and stalls has grown up around the site too, offering tea, snacks and souvenirs to travelers pausing for photos.
Despite the crowds, the sheer scale and width of the falls tends to win people over regardless, especially after heavy rain when both cascades run full and the sound of rushing water carries clearly up to the viewpoint above, a genuinely impressive sight for something requiring so little effort to reach.
