Statue of King Parakramabahu the Great
A striking rock-cut figure of a robed, bearded sage holding a manuscript, widely thought to depict the great king Parakramabahu, standing near the Potgul Vihara.
On the eastern bank of Parakrama Samudra, roughly 100 meters north of the Potgul Vehera monastery, a colossal figure carved in high relief on the face of a natural rock boulder has puzzled historians for well over a century, its identity still genuinely disputed despite its long standing popular name. Standing likely from the 12th century during the reign of King Parakramabahu I, the statue is traditionally identified as a depiction of the great king himself, and it's widely considered one of the finest surviving examples of stone sculpture from the entire Polonnaruwa period, its proportions and craftsmanship reflecting the genuine artistic sophistication of the era.
That traditional identification isn't universally accepted though, some scholars have pointed to the statue's notably minimalist, restrained features, arguing they seem inconsistent with how a reigning king would typically be portrayed, and have instead proposed the figure might represent a sage named Pulasthi, whose name may connect directly to Polonnaruwa's own ancient title, Pulathisipura, meaning the City of Pulasthi. This alternate theory suggests the statue could depict a revered religious or scholarly figure rather than royalty at all, a genuine scholarly puzzle that's never been definitively resolved.
Whatever its true subject, the statue's dramatic setting, carved directly into a boulder overlooking the vast reservoir that Parakramabahu himself commissioned, gives it a genuinely commanding presence regardless of whose likeness it ultimately captures, a fitting visual anchor for a king whose legacy, whether in stone portraiture or in the massive hydraulic engineering surrounding it, still dominates Polonnaruwa's landscape more than eight centuries later.
