Uchchimunai
One of the largest of the Kalpitiya islands, a quiet place of fishing families, sandbars and lagoon sunsets, often visited by boat on Baththalangunduwa trips.
Uchchimunai is one of the largest of the islands that lie off the Kalpitiya peninsula, a quiet place of fishing families, sandy shores and wide views across the water. Life here moves at the pace of the tides and the fishing seasons, and visitors are still rare enough to feel welcome.
What made Uchchimunai famous on social media are its sandbars and sunsets. At low tide, long ribbons of sand appear around the shore, surrounded by shallow, clear water, and in the evening the colourful fishing boats rest in the shallows as the sun sets over the lagoon. It is a lovely, peaceful place to walk, swim in calm conditions and watch the light change.
Most visitors reach Uchchimunai by boat from Kalpitiya, often as a stop on a camping trip to Baththalangunduwa, so it is easy to see both islands in one outing. Ask your boat operator to include it, and agree the route, timing and price before you set off. Facilities on the island are very basic, so bring water, snacks and sun protection.
The sea and lagoon are calmest from around December to April, the best time for boat trips. Outside that season, crossings may be rough or not run at all. This is a fishing community, so dress modestly in the village, ask before taking photos of people, and take all your rubbish back with you.
