Unawatuna Beach
A curving golden bay just south of Galle, sheltered and shallow enough for easy swimming, lined with palms, beach bars and seafood shacks.
About 5 km southeast of Galle city, tucked into a gently curving bay, Unawatuna has built a reputation as one of Sri Lanka's most consistently loved beaches, golden sand, warm turquoise water, and a laid back atmosphere that draws both backpackers and families in equal measure. Its natural bay shape keeps the water notably calm compared to more exposed stretches of coast nearby, making it one of the more reliable spots on the southern coast for safe, easy swimming.
Beyond the beach itself, Unawatuna functions as a genuine hub for coastal activity, a street market runs right behind the shoreline, packed with clothing stalls, jewelry, local food vendors and souvenir shops, easy to lose an hour wandering through even for visitors who didn't come planning to shop. Nearby, a sea turtle hatchery offers visitors a chance to learn about endangered turtle conservation efforts and even release baby turtles into the ocean, a genuinely popular add on for families staying in the area.
Restaurants, bars and lounges line the beachfront in real density here, consistently rated among the better dining scenes on Sri Lanka's south coast, ranging from casual beach shacks to more polished seafood spots. With Galle Fort just a short tuk-tuk, bus or taxi ride away, and the ancient rock carved Yatagala Temple sitting nearby too, Unawatuna works well both as a standalone beach destination and as an easy, relaxed base for exploring the wider Galle area.
