Originally established during British colonial rule as Victoria Park, it was later renamed in honour of Viharamahadevi, the legendary queen and mother of King Dutugemunu, a figure celebrated in Sri Lankan history for her courage and devotion.
The park spans a wide area dotted with old rain trees, flowering plants, and open lawns, making it a popular spot for locals to walk, exercise, or simply escape the heat of the day.
