Weligama is where half of Sri Lanka learns to surf. The bay is wide, shallow and gentle, with a soft, forgiving break rolling in over sand rather than reef, which makes it about the friendliest place on the island to stand up on a board for the first time. On any given morning the water is dotted with beginners wobbling to their feet and instructors cheering them on.
Because of that, the whole beachfront has grown up around surfing, with board hire, lessons and surf cafes lining the sand, and it is cheap and easy to arrange a lesson on the spot. Out in the bay sits tiny Taprobane Island, a single villa on a private rock that is one of the prettiest sights on the coast, even if you can only admire it from the beach. Beyond the surf it is a relaxed, slightly scruffy, friendly sort of place.
The season runs roughly November to April, when the south coast is at its calmest. It sits right beside Mirissa, so many people base themselves in one and dip into the other, pairing surf lessons here with a whale trip there. Beginners should stick to the main bay where the break is softest, and more experienced surfers can find punchier waves at nearby Midigama. Give it a lazy half day, or a lazy week. Plenty of people mean to move on and then just book another night.
