Yatala Wehera | Yatala Stupa
A restored ancient stupa near Tissamaharama ringed by a rare wall of carved elephant heads, with a small museum of relics from the old Ruhuna kingdom.
On the outskirts of Tissamaharama, a distinctive bell shaped stupa rises from a base ringed with carved stone pillars, its construction tied to King Mahanaga, brother of King Devanampiyatissa, who fled south to Ruhuna in the 3rd century BCE after a poisoning plot targeted him back in Anuradhapura. Settling in the Magama area, Mahanaga went on to found a regional kingdom that would grow into a major stronghold of Sinhalese civilization in the south, and Yatala Wehera stands as one of the clearest physical remnants of that founding chapter, a stupa built not by a distant emperor but by a king establishing his own new capital.
What sets Yatala apart visually from Sri Lanka's many other ancient stupas is its unusual surrounding structure, a ring of stone pillars encircling the base, a design feature genuinely distinctive within the country's broader stupa architecture. The site has also proven archaeologically rich, excavations turning up ancient artifacts and inscriptions that have helped historians piece together the layered, complicated founding story of Ruhuna as a kingdom, Mahanaga's flight south transforming from a court intrigue into the origin point of an entire regional civilization.
Quieter and less visited than the grand stupa at nearby Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara, Yatala rewards travelers with a genuine sense of discovery, an ancient site where history feels less curated and more simply, quietly present. It works well as a short stop alongside Tissa Wewa and the main temple complex, together sketching a fuller picture of how this whole area functioned as the beating heart of southern Sri Lankan civilization more than two thousand years ago.
