Best Time to Visit Bali: Complete Season Guide for Beaches, Temples, Surf, and Honeymoons
Plan the right Bali trip with a practical guide to dry season, rainy season, shoulder months, surfing, island hopping, and romantic travel.
Bali stays near the top of people's travel lists for a reason: it works for almost
any kind of trip. Some people come purely for the beaches and sunset clubs. Others are
there for the temples, rice terraces, waterfalls, wellness retreats, or surf. That mix
is exactly why one question keeps coming up when people plan Indonesia trips:
what is the best time to visit Bali?
The honest answer is that Bali works year round, but which months suit you best depends
on what you actually want out of the trip. If sunny beach weather, smooth island hopping,
and easy outdoor days are the priority, the dry season from April to October
is generally your best bet. Before any of that: every international visitor pays a
tourist levy on arrival. Pay it online at
lovebali.baliprov.go.id before you fly and bring the QR code; it saves queuing at the
airport. Most nationalities also pay for a visa on arrival, which gives you 30 days.
Check the current amounts before you travel.
This guide goes through Bali season by season, month by month, and by what kind of trip
you're after. A beach holiday in Seminyak, a wellness stay in Ubud, and a surf trip near
Uluwatu or Canggu don't all want the same weather. The best timing matches the season
to the region and the activity, rather than leaning on one generic label for the
whole island.

Understanding Bali Weather Before You Book
Bali has a tropical climate with just two broad periods rather than four proper
seasons. The dry season runs roughly from April to October, and
the rainy season covers November to March. Temperatures barely
move year round, usually 26°C to 32°C, so it's rainfall and humidity that define
the difference, not heat. Nothing is ever clear cut: dry season days can
still bring a downpour, and wet season mornings can stay sunny for hours. The overall
pattern matters more than any single day.
In the dry season you'll get more reliable sunshine, lower humidity, easier roads, and
clearer views for sightseeing. In the rainy season the island tends to look greener and
less dusty, but heavy afternoon downpours, sticky evenings, and rougher seas can throw
off plans. None of that makes Bali a bad choice in the wetter months, it just means
picking your areas and adjusting expectations more carefully.
- Best overall weather: May, June, July, August, and September
- Best shoulder months: April and October
- Wettest period: typically December to February
- Best for beaches and island hopping: dry season
- Best for greener scenery and quieter stays: rainy season or shoulder season
Best Time to Visit Bali by Month
A month by month breakdown is far more useful than a generic wet/dry summary, so here's
how the year tends to play out.
January and February are usually the wettest months. Humidity is high,
beach plans don't always go to plan, and roads can feel slower after heavy rain. These
months suit travelers who don't mind spending more time at spas, cafes, and yoga studios
than on the sand. Villa rates are noticeably cheaper than peak season, some properties
drop 30 to 40% compared to July or August.
March is still on the wetter side, but prices are slightly lower before
things pick up. The big thing to know: Nyepi, Bali's Day of Silence, usually falls in
March, on a date set by the Balinese calendar. This is a full 24 hours (6am to 6am) where
the entire island goes quiet. The airport closes, no one is allowed outside including
tourists, and lights must be off after dark. You'll stay in your hotel and hear almost
nothing. The night before, villages carry enormous Ogoh-Ogoh effigies through
the streets by torchlight, some up to 8 metres tall, before burning them. It's one of
the most atmospheric things you can witness in Bali. If your dates cross March 19,
don't book flights that day.
April, May, and June are some of the best months on the calendar. The
island is still green from the rains, outdoor travel gets noticeably easier, and crowds
haven't hit their July to August peak. This stretch gives you a great balance of weather,
atmosphere, and manageable tourist numbers.
July and August are peak season. Weather is excellent but so is
demand: beach towns, day clubs, and the big attractions get crowded, hotel prices climb,
and Nusa Penida day trips fill up fast. It's still a great trip, just book
accommodation well in advance and expect the famous viewpoints to be packed by late
morning.
September is a favourite for repeat visitors. Conditions are still
great, but peak season crowds have started to ease off and prices tend to drop back.
Many people who know Bali well will tell you September is the sweet spot.
October is another solid shoulder month: warm, good for sightseeing,
with properly quiet crowds in many areas. Rain becomes more likely toward the end of
the month.
November and December head into the wetter part of the year. Resort
stays and shorter luxury trips can still work well, but outdoor timing gets harder to
predict. December especially surges around Christmas and New Year, rates spike sharply
and popular villas sell out months ahead.
Best Time for Bali Beaches and Island Hopping
If your version of Bali involves beach clubs, boat trips over clear water, snorkeling,
and hopping between islands, the dry season is the better window. Seminyak, Canggu,
Jimbaran, Uluwatu, Nusa Dua, Nusa Penida, and the Gili Islands are all more enjoyable
when the sea is calmer and boats run reliably.
The fast boat from Sanur to Nusa Penida takes about 45 minutes and
is cheap by Western standards. You'll also pay a small
environmental levy at the Nusa Penida harbour on arrival.
In rough conditions between November and March, crossings sometimes get cancelled or
delayed, which matters if you're on a tight schedule. The famous Kelingking
Beach viewpoint gets crowded by 10am, if you're doing this as a day trip,
aim to arrive before 9am to get the cliff to yourself.
If beaches are the main reason you're going, May to September is
usually your sweet spot, with April and October as decent shoulder options. Beach time
is still possible in the wetter months, just build in flexibility for plan changes.
Best Time to Visit Ubud and Inland Bali
Ubud is a big part of why Bali appeals to more than just beach travelers. Rice
terraces, jungle villas, cafes, temples, craft markets, cooking classes, waterfalls,
and wellness retreats all live here. Ubud works in pretty much any season, the question
is which version of it you'd rather have.
The Tegallalang Rice Terraces, about 12km north of Ubud, charge
a small entry fee per person. They're beautiful but
fill up quickly, tour buses start arriving around 11am. Go before 8:30am for the
best light and a fraction of the crowd. Swing photos along the ridge cost
extra and the price depends on the operator, so agree it first.
In the dry months, walking routes, temple visits, and day trips are straightforward.
In the rainy months the landscape gets even greener, and staying in a jungle villa
during a downpour can feel pretty special. The flip side is more humidity, outdoor
plans that sometimes get rained out, and paths that turn slippery. For a first visit,
April to October is the safer call.
Best Time to Visit Bali for Surfing
Bali is one of Asia's best known surf destinations, but the right timing depends on
which coast you're heading to. The dry season (April to October) is
best for the west and south coast breaks that Bali is famous for: Uluwatu, Padang
Padang, Canggu, and Medewi.
June to August is when Southern Ocean storms push the most powerful
swells up the Bukit Peninsula, groundswells arrive from the southwest with periods
regularly exceeding 16 seconds and face heights above 2 metres at Uluwatu. Padang
Padang needs a strong SW swell, mid tide, and light offshore winds to all line up
together, it doesn't fire every day, but when it does it's the heaviest reef break
on the island. May and September offer a better balance of clean
swell and less crowded lineups. September also comes with lower prices and
accommodation that's easier to book.
In the wetter months, the action shifts toward the east coast, where breaks like
Keramas and Sanur pick up more consistent, smoother swells that work
well for intermediates and beginners. The southeast trade winds in Canggu usually kick
in by around 10am and blow sideshore, early sessions before that window are
generally cleaner regardless of the month.
Best Time for a Bali Honeymoon
Bali is one of Asia's go to honeymoon spots, and it's not hard to see why: jungle
villas, clifftop hotels, beach clubs, spas, and candlelit dinners are all here, often
at prices that feel far more reasonable than other luxury island destinations. A classic
honeymoon route pairs Ubud, private pool villa in the rice fields, with somewhere
coastal like Uluwatu, Seminyak, Jimbaran, or a night on Nusa Penida.
For most couples, May, June, September, or October works best. The
weather is good without the full weight of the July to August crowds, which makes a real
difference if your plans include sunset dinners on private terraces and outdoor days
that shouldn't feel rushed. Jimbaran Bay at sunset, fresh seafood at one of the
beachfront warungs with the Indian Ocean in front of you, is the kind of evening that
works best when it doesn't feel like a queue.
December honeymoons are still common because of holiday timing, but expect wetter
weather and high demand. The trip can absolutely still be great, book early and go
in with expectations that match the season.
Cheapest Time to Visit Bali
Lower prices generally show up during the wetter months outside major holiday periods.
Hotels, villas, and some tours get noticeably cheaper from around January to March,
with decent deals sometimes popping up in November too.
That said, cheap isn't always the same as good value. A bargain villa rate doesn't feel
like much of a win if your boat trip gets cancelled and heavy humid days limit what you
can actually do. Often the smarter move is shoulder season,
April, May, October, or early June, where prices are still reasonable
but you're not giving up much on weather. Temple entry fees stay the same year round
and are modest: Tanah Lot, Uluwatu
(the Kecak dance performance is a separate ticket), and Tirta Empul,
where you may also rent a sarong if you don't bring your own.
Best Time to Visit Bali by Travel Style
The right time comes down to what kind of trip you're planning.
- For first time Bali travelers: May, June, September, or October
- For beach holidays: May to September
- For Ubud and wellness stays: April to October, with rainy season possible for a moodier jungle feel
- For surfing: May and September for balance; June to August for serious swell at Uluwatu and Padang Padang
- For honeymoons: May, June, September, and October
- For lower prices: rainy season and shoulder months
- For Nyepi: arrive before March 18 for the Ogoh-Ogoh parade; no flights on March 19
The real planning question isn't just "when should I go?" It's "what kind of Bali trip
am I actually trying to build?" Once you know that, picking the timing gets a lot easier.
What to Know Before You Go
The best time to visit Bali is generally during the dry season, with
May, June, September, and October standing out as the most balanced
months. For most travelers, these give you the best mix of beach weather, comfortable
sightseeing, reliable island hopping, and good overall atmosphere without the full
July to August pressure.
Pay the tourist levy at lovebali.baliprov.go.id before
you fly, it's mandatory for all international visitors and faster to sort before you
land. Bali rewards a bit of planning ahead. Leave room for flexibility in the itinerary
and you'll usually get a better trip than just following whatever month everyone else
picks.
