Independence Memorial Hall is a national monument in Sri Lanka, built to commemorate the country's independence from British rule, when full governing power was handed back to a Ceylonese-elected legislature on 4 February 1948. Sitting at the heart of Independence Square in Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo, the memorial takes its design cues from the audience hall of the old Kandyan kings, standing on a raised platform and ringed by rows of stone pillars. Inside, the hall houses a statue of D. S. Senanayake, the country's first Prime Minister, along with a small museum tracing the events leading up to independence. It's since become one of Colombo's most recognisable landmarks, and every year on 4 February, national Independence Day celebrations are held on the grounds.
