Lover's Leap Waterfall
A slender waterfall on the slopes of Piduruthalagala just above Nuwara Eliya, named for a tragic local legend, reached on a short walk through a tea estate.
Lover's Leap is a slender ribbon of water, around 30 metres high, dropping off a rocky face on the slopes of Piduruthalagala, Sri Lanka's highest mountain, whose streams feed it. It sits in the Hawa Eliya area just outside Nuwara Eliya, close to the Pedro Tea Estate, and the walk in is a big part of its appeal.
The name comes from a local legend. In the most common telling, a prince fell in love with a village girl, his family forbade the match, and the couple leapt together from the top of the fall. Other versions change the details, and none of it is backed by historical records, but it's the story every driver and guide in town will tell you on the way up.
Most people walk in from Pedro Estate. It's a couple of kilometres along a dirt road and footpaths between the tea bushes, past the estate manager's bungalow, before the fall comes into view. The walk is mostly gentle, though the last stretch near the rocks gets muddy and slippery after rain. About a kilometre before Lover's Leap you also pass Galwala Ella Falls, a smaller seasonal fall worth a quick stop.
The fall is at its fullest after the rains, and mornings are usually clearer before the mist rolls in. I'd pair it with a factory tour at Pedro, since the estate is right on the route, and resist the urge to scramble over the wet rocks at the base for a closer photo.
There's no entry fee and no facilities at the fall, so carry water and a light rain jacket, since showers can arrive with little warning up here. Allow an hour or so for the walk there and back, plus time at the water. An early start usually means a quieter path, with only the tea pluckers at work on the slopes for company.
