Wellawatte Beach isn't a postcard resort beach, and it doesn't try to be. This is Colombo's seafront as locals live it, with fishing boats pulled up on the sand, a small fishermen's pier and the coastal railway running right alongside the shore.
That everyday character is exactly what makes it interesting. In the mornings, you might see fishermen bringing in their catch and mending nets beside their brightly painted boats. By evening, the mood shifts as families and friends come down to walk, talk and watch the sun sink into the Indian Ocean.
The trains are part of the experience too. The coastal line runs just metres from the sand, and watching a train rattle past with the sea on the other side is a very Colombo sight. Always cross the tracks only at proper crossing points, and take care with children.
This is a place for walking and sunset-watching rather than swimming, as the sea along Colombo's coast can be rough. Entry is free, and it's open at all hours. Plan around two hours if you want to walk the shore and stay for dusk.
Wellawatte sits about 7 km south of central Colombo. It's a 20-minute tuk-tuk or taxi ride down Marine Drive, or you can catch buses 100, 101 or 102. The easiest option is the coastal train, since Wellawatte station sits right beside the beach. Afterwards, the neighbourhood's busy streets are full of places to eat.
