Top 10 Best Beaches in Sri Lanka to Visit
Discover the top 10 beaches in Sri Lanka for swimming, surfing, snorkeling, and relaxed tropical coastal holidays, with seasons, costs, and practical tips.
Before we get to the sand, one thing you really need to know: Sri Lanka has three
coastlines, and they take turns. Which of the best beaches in Sri Lanka you should pick depends almost entirely on when you travel. The west and south (Mirissa, Unawatuna, Weligama,
Hiriketiya, Bentota) are at their best from November to April. The
east coast (Arugam Bay, Nilaveli, Uppuveli, Pasikuda) flips on from
May to October. Get the season wrong and the postcard beach you flew
in for greets you with monsoon swell and closed guesthouses. Get it right and there is
always a good coast somewhere on the island, whatever month you travel.
With that rule in your pocket, here are the best beaches in Sri Lanka,
ten of them, with honest notes on what each one actually does best and what it costs
to be there. To fold them into a bigger route, open the Sri Lanka trip planner.

1. Mirissa Beach
Mirissa is the south coast's headline act: a 3km crescent of sand with water calm
enough for proper swimming through the November to April season. It is also where the
whales are. Boats leave early in the morning, with
blue whales, sperm whales, and dolphins showing up regularly between
November and April; in the December to March peak, book a day ahead.
Come late afternoon, join the small migration to Coconut Tree Hill
at the east end of the beach, free, but be there by 4pm if you want a decent spot for
sunset. Guesthouses are cheap, and the beachfront grills serve fresh fish
every evening. Couples planning a coastal stay can compare it with the Sri Lanka honeymoon itinerary.

2. Unawatuna Beach
Unawatuna's secret weapon is its reef. The natural barrier breaks the swell before it
reaches the crescent bay, making this one of the calmest, safest swims on the whole
south coast, and just 5km from Galle, a short tuk tuk ride from the
Fort. Restaurants and cafes sit right on the sand, so the day organizes itself. When
the main beach gets sociable, walk 10 minutes through the jungle to
Jungle Beach, the quieter cove, or take the 20 minute climb to the
Japanese Peace Pagoda, free, hilltop, sea views included. West coast
season: November to April.

3. Bentota Beach
Only have a night or two near Colombo? Bentota is your answer, about 65km south and
roughly 2 hours by bus or train. The beach is a wide 4km ribbon backed by resort
hotels, and it is the island's water sports hub: jet skiing,
windsurfing, banana boats and water
skiing on offer from the beach operators. Behind the town, the Madu
River hides one of the west coast's best outings, a mangrove boat safari at
of about 1.5 to 2 hours, weaving between islands, fish
therapy stops, and a temple island. Ideal as an easy extension from Colombo or a
gentle first stop before Galle. West coast season: November to April.

4. Arugam Bay
Say "Sri Lanka" to a surfer anywhere in the world and Arugam Bay is the reply. The
season runs May to October with July and August at the peak.
Main Point is the famous long right hander, best left to intermediate
and advanced riders, while beginners get their first waves at Pottuvil
Point (2km north) or with one of the surf schools along the main road,
usually with the board and rash guard included. Guesthouses
are simple and cheap, many within 200m of the water. Two things to plan around: the
320km drive from Colombo takes 6 to 7 hours, and outside May to October the ocean turns
rough while most of the town closes for the off season.

5. Nilaveli Beach
Nilaveli, 10km north of Trincomalee, is long, wide, and blissfully uncrowded compared
with the southern beaches, and it is the launch point for the east coast's best
underwater day. Pigeon Island National Park sits ten minutes offshore:
you pay a park ticket plus a separate fee
for the return boat, with tickets from the office in front of the
Anilana hotel. The reef delivers blacktip reef sharks, sea turtles, and snorkeling
gentle enough for first timers. East coast season: May to September;
outside it, the sea roughens and many guesthouses lock up for the year.

6. Uppuveli Beach
Think of Uppuveli as Nilaveli's easygoing younger sibling, 4km north of Trincomalee
town, closer to everything, and gentler on the wallet. Small guesthouses and local
seafood restaurants sit right on the sand, and the whole place moves at a pace the
south coast forgot years ago. It is the smart pick if you want the east coast
experience with less fuss and lower cost. East coast season: May to
September, and Pigeon Island is still an easy day out, just a 15 minute
tuk tuk north to the Nilaveli ticket office.

7. Hiriketiya Beach
Hiriketiya is what happens when a small horseshoe bay gets discovered by
people with good taste. Just 200m wide, 5km from Dickwella, with calm water inside
the bay and a gentle break beyond it, and since 2015 it has sprouted yoga studios,
specialty coffee, and boutique hotels, all within
walking distance of the sand. Surf lessons come
with board included, some of the best value learning on the island. South coast
season: November to April, and it slots in neatly as a 2 or 3 night
pause between Mirissa and Tangalle.

8. Tangalle Beach
Tangalle is for the days when you want the coast to yourself. The least developed of
the main southern towns, its beaches, Marakolliya, Medilla, and the main bay, stretch
wide and quiet, made for long, aimless walks. The area's best hour happens
after dark: the Rekawa Beach turtle project (8km east) charges
a small fee to watch endangered sea turtles nest and
hatch at night, seasonal with the nesting cycles, typically April to September. At the
other end of the spectrum, Amanwella (10km west) remains one of the
finest, and most expensive, luxury beach stays in the country. South coast season:
November to April.

9. Pasikuda Beach
Pasikuda's party trick is its sandbar. The shallow shelf runs hundreds of metres out
from shore, keeping the warm, clear water at knee to waist depth for what feels like
forever, which makes this bay, 35km north of Batticaloa, the safest swimming beach in
Sri Lanka for children and nervous swimmers alike. The accommodation skews toward
mid range resorts right on the beach, with fewer budget options than Arugam Bay. East
coast season: April to September, and it strings together naturally
with Arugam Bay and Trincomalee on an east coast circuit.

10. Weligama Beach
If you have ever wanted to stand up on a surfboard, Weligama is where it will happen.
The 5km bay serves gentle, endlessly repeating waves over a rock free sandy bottom,
which is why every surf school on the south coast seems to be based here. Group lessons
usually last about 90 minutes, private lessons cost more,
the board and rash guard are included, and boards are cheap to rent by the hour
once you can ride. The town sits 150km from Colombo (2.5 hours by bus or train) and
chains neatly with Mirissa (15km) or Hiriketiya (20km) on a south coast run. Season:
November to April.
Weligama keeps surfing friendly, which is why so many people catch their first wave here. Source: Wikimedia Commons.

Which of the Best Beaches in Sri Lanka Is Right for You?
- Best for surfing: Arugam Bay (May to Oct), Weligama (Nov to Apr), and Hiriketiya (Nov to Apr)

- Best for whale watching: Mirissa (early morning boats, Nov to Apr)
- Best for families: Pasikuda (shallow lagoon, east coast) and Bentota (resort infrastructure, west coast)
- Best for quiet travel: Tangalle, Uppuveli, and Nilaveli
- Best for snorkeling: Pigeon Island, a short boat ride from Nilaveli (May to Sep)
Notice the pattern: the season matters as much as the style. The same south coast
beach that is rough and unsafe in July is calm and clear in January.
Planning Your Sri Lanka Beach Trip
The top 10 beaches in Sri Lanka stretch across three coastlines and
two opposing seasons, so the single most important planning decision is matching your
travel dates to the right coast. Solve that one puzzle and everything on this list
